25 missions in sub-Saharan Africa have Dr. Paul (77y) and Dr. Myriam (72 years old) already completed, when they arrive at Bansang hospital, the second largest hospital in Gambia. It may be their last medical mission. 60 procedures are planned: hernia & thyroid operations. After the death of the chief surgeon of Bansang hospital, there is no more expertise in-house and the waiting lists of patients are full. Revive vzw sent 11 healthcare professionals led by Dr. Paul to clear some of the backlog. As a photographer, I was able to walk along to document their operations and in the meantime did some logistical work.

When the news went around that Belgian surgeons had arrived at a nearby hospital, people even came from Senegal and Congo (about 300 km away) hoping for a consultation and an operation. Unfortunately, not everyone could be helped. The demand is greater than what could be achieved in the limited time. Revive vzw. plans new missions to Gambia.
